In Turin, Piedmont, the City Council and the Superintendence of Arts have authorized the construction of an underground car park in the site where it was well known the presence of important underground structures of what was once one of the most important citadels of Europe (Century XVI). Excavations already begun unfortunately have knocked down part of the galleries.
Urgently we ask that instead of a anonymous car park there it is realized an archaeological park, as part of the museum complex, that connect the Pietro Micca Museum, the Artillery Museum and the historical underground fortress of the sixteenth named Pastiss, this would be a historic monument and a unique cultural testimony in worldwide.
Turin, the capital of Piedmont, has an extensive underground network of tunnels and fortifications that once formed part of the great Citadel, one of the largest and most important in Europe, built in the sixteenth century and partially demolished at the surface in the mid-nineteenth. Only a very small part of this underground city is currently open.
.
The City Council and the Superintendence of Arts allowed the excavation of an underground car park of four levels on the area where it knew that would emerge the best preserved sections of tunnels. The works built of bricks found with more than 150 meters of main gallery of the Citadel were dismantled in secret, without to advice citizens.
.
Once denounced the irreversible destruction took place, the indignation of citizens has forced the City Council and the Superintendence of Arts for a partial reverse; however the works are continuing with the plans to build the car park at any costs in the heart of this unique archaeological area.
.
The latest important findings, as inalienable heritage of the history of Turin, must be preserved and open to visitors in their entirety and context.
.
The “Committee Pietro Micca”, constituted for the occasion, has developed an alternative proposal to the car park: the creation of the “Archaeological Park Pietro Micca”, a Museum complex including the underground fortress of the sixteenth century “Pastiss”, the Museum Pietro Micca and the Mastio of the Citadel – returned to its original venue of Museum of Artillery, as one of the largest and most important in the world.
.
Consequently the majority of citizens and common sense are calling
– for an immediate and permanent suspension of the works on the car park inside the ruins of the Citadel,
– and that the City of Turin is committed to start the restoring of the original context with the reconstruction of the demolished parts,
– and to complete in a short time all the necessary steps for the construction of the Archaeological Park Pietro Micca
– and moreover make sure that all the historical works in the subsoil of the City are bound and protected from further destruction.
